Hey all, it’s been a while… (do to weather related hell)
But, I’m going to be creeping back into Tumblr, because I think it’s rad.  Check out Casey Shea’s record, I recorded a few tracks on the Neve @ MetroSonic earlier this year.  Lot’s more great releases to talk about as well!  I’ll be back folks.

It’s here!  It’s here!  The long-awaited, highly anticipated, brand new Casey Shea album, In Your Head is now available for the first time ever at the Family Records Store.  You wanna download it straight to your computer as a WAV or MP3?  You got it.  You wanna take the physical route and order a CD?  You got it.  You wanna prove your musical superiority with a badass clear vinyl? (That’s right, I said CLEAR VINYL).  You got it!  We have it all, and we think you should have it too.
If you like what you hear (and I know you will), you can catch Casey on tour opening for Wakey!Wakey! in the UK, or at his album release show at Rockwood Music Hall on November 5th.

Peter Murphy - Ninth

Hey all, one of the first records I ever assistant engineered is finally out. It’s called “Ninth” by Peter Murphy.  This was my first big gig apprenticing with John Siket up at Dreamland Recording Studio in Woodstock, NY. I remember it well. Great music, great people, great food, great studio, and a great education. I also remember driving out to Levon Helm’s Ramble barn/studio to borrow a Vox AC30. Wonderful memories. My recommended listening: “Memory Go”, “Seesaw Sway”, “The Prince & Old Lady Shade”, and “I Spit Roses” ROCK. -sw

Some hazy details:  Recorded on their custom API discrete 48x48.  The drums had fresh pieces of legal paper taped to their heads every take for added snap on attacks (yep).  This led to a hilarious pile of paper that turned into a mountain behind the drums (a DW kit I believe) by the end of the session.  Vocals were done with a U47 into an La-3a I believe.  The band was tracked live @ Dreamland, with the strings overdubbed at Sear Sound in Manhattan.

INCREDIBLE!  Two Words:  New York.

Sponge Bob Busted !
so i’m on the F train the other day and this fkn guy bumps into me
and tries to run the broken watch scam on me. you know what i mean…
he shows me some bullshitty watch on his wrist and he’s like…
“yo. you broke my fuckin’ watch! you owe me 500 dollars.”
he started getting real close and all in my personal space.
before i could react to what he was saying i was like
“oh shit! i know this dude. wait.. wait.. uuhhh…”
then the train kinda stopped quick and he fell back against the doors and i was like
“fuck you Sponge Bob”. he kinda shrugged it off and walked to the next car.
and i’m all , man that was odd. nobody else seemed to notice. anyways,
when i got off at my stop (47th+6th)
i saw some kind of scuffle and then a crowd grew.
i guess Sponge Bob tried to steal somebody’s blackberry or something
and got busted by an undercover cop. i waited at the top of the stairs for him cause i thought you guys would like the picture of the Sponge Bob perp walk.
you’re welcome.

Baby Brother and my Cowboy Punk vocal setup
These Jameson-fuled BK/NY rockers are some favs of mine.  All live, all off the handle, loud, fast, & exceptionally musical.  This is not noise, it is soulful, well constructed and melodic songs that are easy and fun to sing to, with some NASTY guitars, and “feel-changes” that will make you lose your balance (in a good way).
For Jeremy Beazlie’s vocals (think Jagger meets Jack White), I used a Blue Woodpecker Ribbon (singing into rear side which produces a slightly darker color, double pop filtered as well), and my homemade Pac Bell Telephone Mic (yes, it sounds like a phone, because it is one).
Both are hitting a Neve preamp and EQ on the 5315 console, then absolutely blasting a Universal Audio 175-B limiter (the real one, no re-issues here, this thing gets HOT!).  The 175’s tubes start to break up at a certain point, and at that threshold lies the magic for this example…
I’ll be mixing later this month.  Lookin’ forward to it.
Some other details:  We cut 11 songs in 2 days at MetroSonic, Teruhisa Uchiyama was assisting.  Check out Baby Brother’s older/rougher stuff (that I recorded, mixed, and mastered all analog in 3-days) here, the new record is of a higher fidelity of course, but still just as “raw.”  Check out “Rodeo Song”, “Abuse”, or “Ghost Train Robbers” (some of my favs).

The “Q” Region (as yet unexplained)
A brilliant drawing first seen in a TapeOp Magazine from last year.  It graphs the level of Artist Performance over Time with some truly spot on realities.  It’s all about finding that “Q” Region, and making sure that you’re paying attention rolling tape.  Love it.

6am at Cove.
These analog sessions @ Cove City Sound Studios have been rad to the max.  Why?
10 Reasons Why Tape is KING (& you don’t have to be an engineer to appreciate’m):
The sound.
The patience that it gives everyone in the room.
Catching up on life (& The Howard Stern Show) while calibrating the machine.
Not having a computer monitor or mouse even in sight.
The sound.
Pressing those glorious gigantic light up buttons ***Ca-CHUNK!!!***
Having to use your reflexes & skill 100% of the time (no undo here folks, just consequences…)
Hisssssss…….
The welcome breaks we all get while the tape is rewinding.
And… the sound.
(It’s a Studer a820 mkII & an SSL 4000 G+ Console.  Vocal chain for this session:  Gefell 92.1 Tube Mic > UREI LA-3A > Distressor (very gently) > Tube Tech PE-1C > SSL Ch 25 in REC+MIX+FADREV [overdub] mode.  Small fader sending level to tape.  Client likes to hit his ATR reel HARD so lots of riding and watching that meterbridge)
